Despite having learned many languages, probably more than 30, I had never realized that learning writing systems can be so much fun. Nowadays, whenever I feel lazy to learn a language, I learn the writing system (if it is new to me). It also takes much less time to learn a writing system than a language. And you can amaze your friends with your new knowledge!

Learners learn languages in many different ways, such as attending language classes, playing games, or listening to audio. Whatever the methods are, they usually cover four aspects of language learning: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Mastering only one or two of these is not enough because, in reality, we read, listen, speak, and write.

Nauruan Language

The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has held a two-day event promoting the Asia-Pacific culture in the capital city of Taiwan, Taipei City, on September 28-29th. The participants come from the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Vietnam, Tuvalu, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand, Palau, Nauru, Malaysia, Kiribati, Japan, Indonesia, India, Fiji, and Brunei. Apart from performing dances from each of the countries, the participants also displayed a wide variety of handicrafts and artworks as well as authentic cuisine on each country's booth.

6 Local Writing Systems in Indonesia

Indonesia is a vast country in Southeast Asia that anyone can recognize easily on the map because it borders the sea, thus its country border is also the sea border. Hundreds of ethnic groups and languages exist in Indonesia. Despite having numerous writing systems, the government recognizes the Latin alphabet as the official writing system, which was introduced during the colonization by the Europeans.

A unique group of Chinese Indonesian: Why are they still able to converse fluently in Hokkien after most areas have been "Indonesianized"?

Before visiting Medan, Indonesia, like many non-Indonesians who have never visited Medan, I thought that the local Chinese were highly Indonesianized, just like other parts of Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung. Therefore, when I visited Medan for the first time in 2009, I was deeply surprised by the fact that most of the local Chinese, including children, speak fluent Hokkien, as Hokkien is also my father's native dialect.

Klingon: nuqneH

Klingon ( tlhIngan Hol ) is the language spoken by alien characters in the Star Trek movies called Klingons. The first few words had been invented in 1979 by James Doohan ("Scotty") for the first Star Trek movie. In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , the director and writer-producer wanted the Klingons to speak a real-sounding language, so they appointed Marc Okrand to invent the Klingon language . Besides the invention of few alien-sound words, he also invented a complete language, with its own grammar and vocabulary. Marc created uncommon consonants and combinations of consonants in natural languages in order to make it sound alien, such as /q͡χ/.

Learn From Multilingual Phrases

I admit that not all sentences in a phrasebook are helpful for me. Most of the time, I only skim the book to learn sentences that are useful for me. When I'm lucky, I'll find many valuable sentences. Otherwise, those books won't be helpful and would likely be kept on my bookshelf for a long time.

Languages in my daily life

It takes dedication, effort, and time to learn a language but it takes even more to maintain the language skill. Once you have reached the first milestone in your learning journey, in the beginning, you would feel the excitement and joy of accomplishment but the more you know the language, the learning progress seems to improve slowly, and the excitement you used to feel won’t be that strong anymore. That is when you should know that you are already in the maintenance phase of language learning.
