Despite having learned many languages, probably more than 30, I had never realized that learning writing systems can be so much fun. Nowadays, whenever I feel lazy to learn a language, I learn the writing system (if it is new to me). It also takes much less time to learn a writing system than a language. And you can amaze your friends with your new knowledge!

Learners learn languages in many different ways, such as attending language classes, playing games, or listening to audio. Whatever the methods are, they usually cover four aspects of language learning: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Mastering only one or two of these is not enough because, in reality, we read, listen, speak, and write.

6 Local Writing Systems in Indonesia

Indonesia is a vast country in Southeast Asia that anyone can recognize easily on the map because it borders the sea, thus its country border is also the sea border. Hundreds of ethnic groups and languages exist in Indonesia. Despite having numerous writing systems, the government recognizes the Latin alphabet as the official writing system, which was introduced during the colonization by the Europeans.

Nauruan Language

The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has held a two-day event promoting the Asia-Pacific culture in the capital city of Taiwan, Taipei City, on September 28-29th. The participants come from the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Vietnam, Tuvalu, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand, Palau, Nauru, Malaysia, Kiribati, Japan, Indonesia, India, Fiji, and Brunei. Apart from performing dances from each of the countries, the participants also displayed a wide variety of handicrafts and artworks as well as authentic cuisine on each country's booth.

The Beauty of Chinese Character

People who have studied Chinese must realize that Chinese character is not just a character, but it is also an art. Every stroke in the character forms a beautiful combination of a meaning. It is said that Chinese character evolves from time to time based on the actual object. Although I cannot say that it is 100% true, there are books about Chinese pictogram. For example, you can see below how "sun" and "moon" was written in the past and the evolution of it until nowadays. Characters 日 and 月, on far right, are the characters used today.

Learning French from a Native Spanish Speaker's Perspective

Being convinced that I wanted to do research and teaching, I decided to study Ph.D. in France. For that reason, I started learning French. I think that when you learn new things, you need to be motivated in order to assure success on it. Before visiting Medan, Indonesia, like many non-Indonesians who have never visited Medan, I thought that the local Chinese were highly Indonesianized, just like other parts of Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung. Therefore, when I visited Medan for the first time in 2009, I was deeply surprised by the fact that most of the local Chinese, including children, speak fluent Hokkien, as Hokkien is also my father's native dialect.

Sorry, I don't speak Chinese

Have you noticed that most of the time, English seems to be the only language used for international communication? When you go to the airport or tourist places in any non-English speaking country, you will always see English on the signboards. When you meet anyone that doesn't have a common language with you, you would probably speak English too. Or when someone approaches you on the street in a foreign country, that person would probably speak English with you.

Medan Chinese: The most controversial community in Indonesia

The author was born in Binjai on August 22, 1959, but grew up in Medan. His youth was spent as a journalist at Analisa Daily for 11 years. During his career as a journalist, he won various writing competitions both at the North Sumatra and national levels.
