Interview: Michael Tetris (Taiwan)

Let's meet Michael Tetris from Taiwan

Could you tell us about yourself, including the languages you know?

I am a tour guide, part time model agent and event host. I have been to about 20 countries so far and still increasing the numbers…and I love outdoors, art and history. I am just another simple man on this planet. I speak Chinese and Taiwanese as native languages, and  I speak English fluently. I also know basic Japanese.

Why do you think languages are important for you?

Language is a window to open your mind and help you to explore the world. Language is a key to open the treasure box of another culture.

Which language are you learning and how do you learn?

I am learning English and Japanese. I use internet and apps to learn these languages. I also listen to English radio station, join different events and I also host events for LE and culture sharing. Dating a native speaker could be another option to improve your language.

Could you tell us which language is the most challenging to learn and why?

I tried to learn Russian, but I didn’t carry on, because the pronunciation (retroflex) and grammar (grammatical gender) are too difficult to me.

Which language is the least challenging to learn and why?

I would say Japanese is easier, because they use a lot of Kanji which were borrowed from traditional Chinese characters and also they have a lot of loan words from English.

What is the next language for you to learn and why?

Probably German or French…..Cause I would like to learn one European language for travel.

What is your advice to other language learners?

Spending time, being patient and create your own environment for a language learning. You should try to find the fun and easiest way to learn and you will pick up very quickly.
