Interview: Michael Tetris (Taiwan)

Let's meet Michael Tetris from Taiwan

Could you tell us about yourself, including the languages you know?

I am a tour guide, part-time model agent and event host. I have been to about 20 countries so far and still increasing the numbers…and I love outdoors, art and history. I am just another simple man on this planet. I speak Chinese and Taiwanese as native languages, and  I speak English fluently. I also know basic Japanese.

Why do you think languages are important to you?

Language is a window to open your mind and help you to explore the world. Language is a key to open the treasure box of another culture.

Which language are you learning and how do you learn?

I am learning English and Japanese. I use the internet and apps to learn these languages. I also listen to English radio station, join different events and I also host events for LE and culture sharing. Dating a native speaker could be another option to improve your language.

Could you tell us which language is the most challenging to learn and why?

I tried to learn Russian, but I didn’t carry on, because the pronunciation (retroflex) and grammar (grammatical gender) are too difficult for me.

Which language is the least challenging to learn and why?

I would say Japanese is easier because they use a lot of Kanji which were borrowed from traditional Chinese characters and also they have a lot of loan words from English.

What is the next language for you to learn and why?

Probably German or French…..Cause I would like to learn one European language for travel.

What is your advice to other language learners?

Spending time, being patient and create your own environment for language learning. You should try to find the fun and easiest way to learn and you will pick up very quickly.
