There is a special term given by the Medan Chinese to other ethnic groups outside of their own, namely Huan Na.
Huan Na consists of two syllables, namely huan and na. Na, as already mentioned, refers to people. While huan in Mandarin refers to "outback". So, literally Huan Na can mean "inland people". In this context, the interior people are interpreted as "local residents" and the other party as immigrants.
For decades this term has stuck on the lips of the Medan Chinese, from children to the elderly. Just like the Chinese term, the term Huan Na is spoken by many Medan Chinese without knowing its explicit or implied meaning.
Huan Na has a meaning that can lead to something negative. Just like the Chinese word, the word Huan Na can imply a bad impression when viewed from the history and background of the use of the word.
